I have been working with young families in multiple capacities for over 20 years. I am a Registered Nurse as well as a Registered Clinical Counsellor; I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and Master of Arts Degree in Counselling Psychology. I have worked in a variety of settings over the years including Pediatrics, Public Health as well as Child and Youth Mental Health. In private practice, I specialize in Reproductive Mental Health issues including Perinatal and Postpartum stress including Depression and Anxiety, Birth Trauma, Grief regarding Pregnancy and Infant Loss, Infertility, and Pre & Post Adoption Support.
I was instrumental in advocating for women experiencing Postpartum Depression and Anxiety (PPD) in Abbotsford. I founded the PPD support group as well as a PPD and Infant Mental Health Therapy group. I have experience training individuals to be supports to women experiencing PPD and Anxiety. My counselling internship was done at BC Women’s Reproductive Mental Health Program and I have carried the work that I did there, out into the valley.
I also have a specialty in Infant Mental Health. Infant Mental Health focuses on the social and emotional well-being of infants and their caregivers and the various contexts within which care giving takes place. Sometimes, things can get in the way and can impede the baby’s ability to explore, learn and grow in their world. Parental mental health is one of them - I help families address the parent’s struggles and how it may be impacting their baby’s growth and development.
I am also committed to families who have experienced loss during the perinatal period. I volunteer my time with Abbotsford Hospice and facilitate a support group for parents who are living with the inconceivable loss of a baby. I also volunteer my time with Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
Over the years, I have sought advanced training in multiple specialized therapies including:
I am passionate about helping parents and caregivers connect with their children. I am a Certified Infant Massage Teacher and received my training from Master Trainer Tina Allan who is founder of Liddle Kidz Foundation, the premier organization for infant and pediatric massage professionals worldwide. I offer lessons teaching parents, grandparents, nannies, and other caregivers the art of Nurturing Touch and Infant Massage. These classes can be offered in a variety of settings and can include specialty classes such as Prenatal, Daddy and Me, and Parents experiencing Postpartum Depression and Anxiety.
In addition to my career, I am a mother, step-mother and wife. My passion for helping families during the transition into parenthood began long ago in my nursing career but was fuelled by my personal experience with Postpartum Depression and Anxiety 17 years ago. As I recovered, I made a personal commitment to helping families avoid feeling alone and stigmatized; I am passionate about offering hope to families during the most difficult and darkest times. I am equally devoted to promoting wellness by providing education to help parents reach their full potential and be the parents they want to be.
